Jay Asher’s What Light is a cute book – nothing more, nothing less. There’s a sweet love story between the Christmas Lot girl and the boy with the bad reputation, but you don’t quite see why the characters fall in love so deeply and so quickly. Conflicts emerge unexpectedly and they resolve with just as little explanation. Sierra’s friends are sweet and interesting, but they have no real impact on anything in the story. Overall, there’s a lot that could be developed more, but what’s there is a cute love story that’s great for a beach read or, in this case, a Christmas vacation read.
